Always Be Tinkering

I’ve written a preaching tip before that was inspired by my love for baseball. As I was listening to the Atlanta Braves’ game on the radio last night, they were talking about the moves that the Braves (the third-best team in baseball, based on record) might make before tomorrow’s trade deadline. The best teams in baseball are always tinkering with their roster, their preparations, and their coaching. Which made me think about a preaching tip…

Always be tinkering. With your upcoming sermon, yes. But always with your style, your preparation, and with your delivery. You’re never a perfect preacher, so there’s always room for improvement. You may have been born and called to be a preacher, but even those who were born and called to a vocation still need to work at it.

Last year, I was talking with a pastor in his 60s. He was telling me about how he had completely changed his approach to sermons. He felt like he was preaching the best sermons of his life and his parishioners were noticing.

You don’t have it all down. I don’t have it all down. So how are you going to tweak your preaching this week? Jump in our Facebook group and let us know on Monday!
