The Six Considerations of Preachers

This preaching tip was shared by Preacher’s Block co-founder, Hunter Bethea. If you’re interested in joining the most focused preachers in the world and getting these tips sent to your inbox every week, sign up here.

Our preaching tip this week is inspired by a podcast by Preacher’s Block co-founder Dr. Jessica LaGrone and Dr. David Watson while interviewing Rev. Anne Kennedy:

According to Rev. Anne Kennedy, there are six considerations every preacher must have when preparing and preaching a sermon: the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, the congregation, the preacher him/herself, and the Scripture text.

At face value, I thought this was rather obvious. Of course we should consider all six of these. Duh, I thought. But Rev. Kennedy pointed out that, as preachers, we usually leave at least one of these out in each sermon we preach.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be reflecting on several of these elements in our preaching tips. But for this week, I wonder if you want to look at your upcoming sermon and ask the question: Which one of these is missing: the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, the congregation, me (the preacher), or the Scripture text?
