A while back, I heard a preacher at a church I had never been to. Halfway through the sermon, I was wondering if the preacher had mentioned God or themselves more. For the rest of the sermon, I noticed how many times the preacher used the pronouns “I” and “me.” It was a lot. The preacher, though well-meaning I’m sure, made every story and every example about themselves. It felt like we were there to listen to stories about their life and their encounters with God. It’s good to use personal examples. But if every example is about us, we can come off as self-focused and miss inviting other people into encountering the God that we have encountered. Protect your I’s; use them, but use them carefully.
