Utilize Seasons for Change

Last week, our preaching tip was about remembering the season you’re in and tailoring your sermon to match your congregation’s receptivity during that season (as a reminder, you can check out past preaching tips here).

This week, we’re talking about how you can utilize the season to make changes.

Maybe you’re feeling led to change up your sermon style. Maybe you’ve been sensing that your congregation would be open to changing up the frequency of communion. Maybe you want to redecorate.

If you’re looking to make a change, then just try it for a season at first. Maybe you’ll realize it’s a terrible idea. Maybe you’ll hear feedback (positive and negative) that you’ve never considered. Maybe you’ll realize how great of an idea it is. I’ve found that Lent and Advent are good seasons to try out new changes, but you could also use the summer or throughout a particular sermon series to try out a new change.

By changing it for just a season, you give your congregation a chance to try it out for a while without the fear of a forever change and you give yourself an off-ramp in case the decision doesn’t work out.
