Ecclesiastes 3:1 famously says, “To everything there is a season…” I think this is especially true for preaching. There are seasons on the calendar that make our people more receptive to challenge and lament and slowing down. Knowing that and trying to capitalize on those seasons can help your sermons have more impact.

Here’s what I’ve found my people to be most receptive to during the seasons:

Advent: Lament and slowing down
Christmas-New Year: Challenge and change
Spring: Deeper dives into Scripture and spiritual practices
End of school year: Slowing down
Summer: Bite-sized thoughts and application (people don’t have a lot of time or attention to give)
Beginning of school year: Challenge, change, slowing down
Fall: Deeper dives into Scripture and spiritual practices

Is that similar to your church’s rhythm? If so, let your sermons meet people where they are and see the impact it might make!
