This week’s preaching tip is from a sermon series we’re doing at my church based on John Mark Comer’s book Practicing the Way (highly recommend it, by the way):
Information only goes so far to change a life. If you’re preaching in hopes of seeing God do a life change in someone, giving them more information is only going to go so far; it probably won’t actually change their life. Instead, what we have to do is partner with Jesus in un-forming the ways they’ve been unintentionally spiritually formed before partnering with Jesus to help re-form them into His image. This means that preaching isn’t enough. But we can use our sermons to give people more than just information. Over the next few weeks in these preaching tips, I’ll explore with you some things we can do in our sermons to partner with God as He changes lives.
