Give your people time to find the Scripture passage. Depending on your order of worship and whether you have a bulletin, this might not be an issue. But if you want people to read the Scripture you’re preaching from in their own Bibles, give them time to find it. I’ve messed this up before—I’d announce the passage and start reading right away, only to see people still flipping pages at the end. Do that too often, and they’ll stop trying to look it up. Now, I mention the passage and pause to give them time. I might offer some context, open my own Bible, or recap last week’s message. Whatever your method, if you want people to read along, give them time.
