Spiritual Formation Tools

I hate to break it to you, but oftentimes, a 20, 30, or 40 minute sermon won’t make a major difference in someone’s life. People usually (but not always) don’t walk away from church totally free from an addiction, or diving into the Bible every day, or asking forgiveness from someone they hurt decades ago. But what a sermon often does is lead someone into a practice that may eventually lead to one of those things. So how might you equip people with a spiritual formation tool? Maybe you’ll take 10 minutes to teach them lectio divina. Or maybe you’ll teach them a breath prayer that they can carry with them this week. I’ve even held up a study Bible and told the congregation what a study Bible is after learning that some in my congregation never knew that there were Bibles that could help them in their study.
