Explain Your Quote

Always explain any quotes you use in a sermon. As preachers, we sometimes add in a quote as the final sentence of a point we’re trying to make and then transition to the next thing we’re saying. No matter how obvious it may be to us why we’re sharing that quote, it’s rarely as obvious to our congregation. Give them time to process the quote and let them know how it relates to what you’ve been saying with one or two sentences about the quote. It doesn’t have to be as obvious as saying, “What this quote means is…” but resist the temptation to use that quote as a mic drop, and take a moment to connect the quote to the rest of what you’ve been saying.
