Not Your People

This preaching tip was shared by Hunter Bethea, one of the founders of Preacher’s Block. If you’re interested in joining the most focused preachers in the world, sign up here.

One of my favorite passages in Scripture is Exodus 32-33. After the Israelites made the golden calf, God says to Moses “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt.” (32:7) Moses then responds by saying “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?” (32:11) Moses knows that the Israelites were God’s people, not his. We would do well to remember the same. These aren’t our people that we’re leading. They’re God’s. That’s both an immense responsibility and an immense relief. We should continue to take the task of leading God’s people seriously, but we should also remember that we don’t have to fix all of our people’s problems… they’re God’s people and He cares more about them than we ever could. Do you need to lean more into the responsibility or relief aspect of your preaching ministry this week?

Next week, I’ll share more about Exodus 32-33 and how it can help us as preachers and pastors!
