The other day, I was listening to Dr. Jessica Hooten Wilson on Dr. Brian Russell’s podcast The Deep Dive Spirituality Podcast. Dr. Hooten Wilson was talking about her recent book, The Scandal of Holiness: Renewing Your Imagination in the Company of Literary Saints. In doing so, she gave this simple advice to preachers: if your job is to read and talk about the Bible, which is filled with narratives, you need to be reading more narratives. Whether it’s fiction or memoir or any other kind of story, read stories. And in doing so, we’ll begin to understand the gift of story that God gave to us, and therefore, will begin to understand Scripture better too.
